Our story
Hello. We're Martyn and Aggy and, together with our bees, we make Humber Honey. 100% raw, natural honey, produced in small batches from our home in Hessle.
Humber Honey was born following a visit to Aggy's parents. While there, we spent some time at their apiary and were totally mesmerised watching the bees coming and going. When we left, we couldn't stop thinking about it. After attending a few courses at our local beekeeping association, we decided to take the plunge and have a go ourselves.
It started with just one hive on our allotment and has grown organically from there. We handle every jar ourselves, from hive to label, so we can tell the story behind our honey.
We're still learning. Every season brings something different. A wet spring, an early summer, a hedgerow that flowered later than usual. The bees respond to all of it, and our job is mostly to pay attention and get out of their way.
Our bees forage across the Humber region, so what ends up in the jar depends on what was flowering nearby at the time. Wildflowers, hedgerows, orchards and arable crops, whatever the bees can find. This is what makes local honey so special, it changes season to season, year to year.
You don't just have to take our word for it. Each jar has a batch number which you can use to trace the honey back to the apiary and season it came from.
We've come a long way since that first visit to Aggy's parents' apiary but a lesson we learnt then still holds true now. The best honey needs very little interference from us. The real work is done by the bees and the weather.
